Today is National Senior Citizens Day, and it is a day worth pausing for.
In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5847, officially designating August 21 as a day to honor older Americans. His words from that proclamation still hold up: “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.”
He was right then, and he is right now.
A Generation Worth Celebrating
The seniors in our communities built the foundation of the world we live in today. They raised families, served their country, built businesses, and shaped the culture around them. Many are still going strong, starting second careers, volunteering, mentoring, and living active lives.
By 2035, approximately 78 million Americans aged 65 and older will call this country home, surpassing the number of Americans under 18 for the first time in history. That is not just a demographic shift; it’s a testament to how much this generation has given, and how much wisdom they still have to offer.
How to Celebrate Today
Here are some ways you can celebrate the special seniors in your life: Spend the afternoon with an elderly family member or neighbor. Offer to help run an errand. Share a meal. Ask about their life and actually listen. The stories older adults carry with them are ones that deserve to be heard, not just once, but often.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can offer is simply your time.
If you are looking for other ways to mark the day, many businesses recognize seniors on August 21. Pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens often expand senior discount programs, and restaurant chains such as Denny’s and IHOP may offer special meal deals. Local community centers sometimes host free events or health screenings, and organizations like AARP are a good resource for finding what is available near you.
