A Family Fought for: The Story of Ethan and Micki

Some of the most meaningful work we do at Care Advantage, Inc. happens quietly in homes, over phone calls, and through follow-ups. Micki’s work with Ethan and his family is one of those stories.

Ethan is a 17-year-old young man living with a congenital brain malformation, epilepsy, and dysphagia. He requires total care for all of his daily needs. A few years ago, Ethan lost his mother to lung cancer, leaving his father, Preston, as his sole caregiver while also raising Ethan’s younger brother. Every single day, Preston physically lifts and transfers Ethan for bathing, meals, play, and rest. As Ethan has grown, the physical toll has become serious, and Preston has already suffered a torn rotator cuff and is in need of surgery.

During supervisory visits, our Director of Clinical Services, Micki Osborne, began noticing the signs of caregiver burnout and physical strain.

Advocacy That Didn’t Stop

Micki soon began to assist with making home modifications for Ethan and his family. When progress stalled, she didn’t wait, and she connected with the local Community Services Board, collaborated with the Community Paramedic Program, and worked with the DBHDS Mobile Rehab Unit. Through that process, she secured an in-home assessment from a physical therapist who confirmed what Micki already knew: for Ethan to safely remain at home with his family, a full ceiling track lift system throughout the home was medically necessary.

That recommendation is now moving forward, which will transform daily life for both Ethan and Preston.

A Family’s Gratitude

Preston had nothing but praise for Micki when we spoke with him recently. He endearingly called her a “NASCAR driver” because she is someone who may have to bump into a few things along the way but never stops moving forward and always finishes the race for her clients.

Micki’s work with Ethan’s family reflects everything we believe in; care should be persistent and compassionate. We are so proud to have Micki on our team, and so grateful for the difference she makes!
